What is esports?

What is esports?

In esports, as in classic sports, the aim is to beat one or more opponents according to the official rules of a game or of a type/discipline of sport. A mixture of strategic thinking, quick reactions, precise movement patterns, excellent communication and many other skills are required in order to achieve this. Professionals master these qualities to the point of perfection. It is just as fascinating for the audience to watch the level of performance on which the professionals play as it is for football fans who watch professional football. Inspired by classical sports, esports competitions also take place in large stadiums which are also broadcasted to an even wider audience. There are commentators, analyses, interviews, autograph sessions and press conferences. What’s more, the infrastructure of the team, with multiple trainers and managers, is also growing to resemble competitive sport as we know it.

Esports is also represented in the amateur and hobby sector. Clubs and associations are formed and self-organised tournaments or virtual ranking lists which are integrated into the game serve, among other things, as platforms on which to compete with other players in a fair, sporting competition. This means that esports is not reserved for just a few professional players, but is a true mass phenomena.

Facts and Figures

Esports players are young, dynamic and predominantly male. Approximately three quarters of esports players worldwide are between 16 and 34 years old. This is not surprising, because this is the time in which the human body has the greatest physical and mental performance potential. The second-largest group of players is made up by the 35- to 44-year-olds, and those over 44 years of age form the smallest group. This seems logical when you consider that esports only reached the public for the first time a few years ago, and that many older people have never heard of it. On the other hand, gender distribution in esports is still relatively one-sided. Men continue to dominate the field, whereby women have begun to catch up over the past years.
